What’s “New at NAMI NH” Newsletter
August 2007

News to distribute and share with your groups and classes

Please share these updates with your support group and classes.

NAMI NH’s new strategic plan challenges us to increase our visibility to all NH communities. Within this newsletter and in future ones, we will focus on some new projects that will help to meet these challenges. I think you will find these projects echo your suggestions and requests.

  • Family to Family Teacher Training - We have received a grant from NAMI National to provide the weekend training format and to increase the number of communities where we teach F2F.
  • Legislative Forum Project
  • Growing Membership and Increasing Referrals from Providers

Pete Earley Presentation - The author of “Crazy, A Father’s Journey Through America’s Mental Health Madness”.

Pete Earley will be speaking on Thursday, October 11th from 7-9 pm at the Concord Auditorium.

Pete Earley was cited by Washingtonian Magazine as one of a handful of journalists in America who "have the power to introduce new ideas and give them currency." He is the author of eight non-fiction books, including two national best sellers and three novels, and is a former reporter for The Washington Post. His books have sold more than one million copies worldwide.

“CRAZY: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness”, which was one of two finalists for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction books, tells two stories. The first is about Mr. Earley’s struggles to get his college-aged son help after he is diagnosed with a mental illness. The second is an investigation of America’s mental health system based on nine months that Mr. Earley spent inside the psychiatric cellblocks at the Miami Dade County City Jail. He followed prisoners with mental illnesses through the justice system and back into the community, to observe how they were treated.

This presentation is free and open to the public.

Whats New?

Advocacy Project

  • Do you have an interest in how your legislator votes?
  • Would you like to share your story and important information about mental health with them?
  • Do you have a morning to learn how to do this effectively?
  • Are you willing to gather a few community leaders and NAMI NH members to talk with your legislator over breakfast or lunch?

If any of this interests you, you can be part of a new NAMI NH grassroots movement to educate legislators all around the state. If you think mental health services are inadequate, here is a chance to spend a few hours to make a huge difference.
