iQ iiiHow did you first learn about NAMI NH and how long have you been involved with the organization?
I had worked for the Head Start Program for 18 years and used NAMI NH as a resource for many families. When my son was hospitalized at New Hampshire Hospital, the social worker told me about the NAMI NH Child and Adolescent Network - that was in 2004. They were beginning to work on a Transition White Paper and this was of interest to me. Since my son became ill, I have had to leave my full time position. I had a need to be involved in something of value outside of his care and NAMI NH has been a great fit for me.
iQ iii Can you share what your NAMI NH volunteer roles are and have been?
Beside my involvement in the NAMI NH Child and Adolescent Network which meets every other month, I volunteer one to two days a week at the central office to assist staff with various administrative tasks. My primary task is to manage the Resource Center which has a wide variety of books, publications and DVDs which members can borrow. I also have worked on maintaining the NIMH inventory of brochures and pamphlets. This past year I completed the Parents Meeting the Challenge Teacher Training. I co-wrote the curriculum for the Emotional Literacy Program which was launched at the Mental Health and Schools Conference held during Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW). This program is offered free to elementary schools to present to their students.
iQ iii What motivates you to continue to dedicate your time and energy to NAMI NH?
Because of our experience of parenting a child with mental illness and developmental disabilities, I am very interested in being involved in improving the systems of care. NAMI NH's mission is something that I feel is important and I want to be a part of attaining the goals of the organization. By being involved I learn, am able to share what I know and also give and receive support. It gives me HOPE!
iQ iii Do you have anything exciting planed for the new year?
Beginning in January, I will be providing monthly write-ups for the NAMI NH E-Newsletter about books, publications and DVDs that are available for members to borrow. I am very excited about teaching first Parents Meeting the Challenge program which will be in Londonderry starting in February and of course, my continued work at the central office and participation in the NAMI NH Child and Adolescent Network meetings.
