SUMMARY:Mental Health Care in Rural NH/VT:  We CAN Do Better
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\nResearch shows that 43.8 million people are affecte
 d by mental illness in the US and that number has remained consistent over
  the years. More than half of these patients do not or cannot receive the 
 services they need. Caring for the mentally ill in our rural communities p
 resents challenges and opportunities for everyone working with this patien
 t population. The conference will include presentations from caregivers as
  well as patients. You will receive helpful information\, and learn about 
 available resources and practical strategies for improving mental health c
 are in your organization and community. We CAN do better!\n\nLearning Outc
 ome\n\nAt the conclusion of this learning activity\, participants will be 
 able to discuss at least three ways to improve evidence based care of pati
 ents with mental health care needs in rural communities.\n\nKeynote Presen
 tation\n\nThe Physiology of Addiction: Effects of Drug-Taking Behavior on 
 the Brain\, presented by Ruth A. Potee\, MD\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\nDr. Ruth Pot
 ee is a board certified Family and Addiction Medicine physician who practi
 ces in western Massachusetts. She is currently the Medical Director for th
 e Franklin County House of Corrections\, the Director of Addiction Service
 s for Behavioral Health Network\, the Medical Director for the Pioneer Val
 ley Regional School District as well as the Co-Chair of the Healthcare Sol
 utions Committee of the Opioid Task Force of Franklin County and the North
  Quabbin Region. Dr. Potee engages communities in discussions surrounding 
 substance abuse through her wide-ranging series of talks. She has been fea
 tured in the Boston Globe and on CNN in an interview with Anthony Bourdain
